Smiles, Aluminum Smiles Nineteen sets of lips could go either way, up, or down depending on whether I could deliver a little smile, or frowns nineteen 8.7 year olds on the average, were waiting to see if I could be a poetic deliver-er we talked of style, of form, content I shared a poem or two of poets here, who gave consent, an A+ to all of you. I never asked if a grade be given to the words of mine for I was blessed by something more, their smiles, all quite sublime. These last two days I spent upright, a wannabe poet in the spotlight for children are so honest, you see, and their truths come easily. Instead, I asked for a word, one that described them best, came home last night, homework as my test. Take their name, and somehow claim this word of theirs to poem a line or two and I was through each name some lines would own. I worked acrostic, Haiku, free verse, and a little Senryu, too, some did rhyme, some were cute, but one, I believe, came right through… three little girls likened themselves to the spirit of a horse, and as I was a little girl once, I knew their heart, of course. When I called the three girls up, and shared with them their poem, one little girl, with aluminum smile, why my heart she surely owned. Her smile was delightful her eyes were bright her grin reached from ear to ear, she had wanted so a horse poem of her own, and her dream was very near. Would I disappoint? See her smile disappear into frowns? here is the poem that she heard, I don’t think I let her down… to run with wind, my tail in flight, my lungs take in good clean air to gallop along, no earthly cares, to neigh in delight, have no fear, would all be a young colt’s dream, but to have a friend, one like you to brush my flank, comb my mane then you could give me a good name and I will be your filly, fine, and you would be a girl called Mine. Did Christmas come early? Was it the Fourth of July? the sparks that flew from her eyes so blue caught my heart in cry! These last two days will live in my heart, in this poet wannabe… for in my mind, in tintype frame, an aluminum smile I’ll see. |

Yes, deVine one...the readings went very well! The kids were very excited that I could take one word [athlete, awecome, cool, cute, funny, happy, loveable, play, smart, tall, football, cats, dogs, horses] and either make a poem of them, or for them. Their teacher was quick to comment if I had "captured" them, and captured them we did, in two ways...one with their smiles, and the other, of course, with pictures! It was a wonderful day. I think one of the best comments was their teacher saying that they would carry this on to next year, and "remember when...." Thanks! |

Nan, somehow I think I need to thank one of the A+ queens...you giggled them right into my work... Marge....so you caught the "ewwww" did you?....and they STILL gave it an A+..... Roger, it was an extreme experience....just a week ago, I spoke to some 70 adults on a professional level....I think with the kids, and poetry?...I was a little more nervous! Thank you ALL for reading! |

What an experience! Is there anything more special than a child's attention, and especially listening or creating poetry? Good for you, for setting an example and giving them a feeling for the art.
