Listening to every heart

0 posted 2001-05-01 03:05 PM

coming home

in taking a late lunch
had to get away
computers are down
what’s to miss

took a short break,
went into the
budget bookstore,
looked around, couldn’t
find what I needed

asked the sleepy man,
“do you have poetry?”

he shook awake, pointed and said
“turn around”
and then he said
“keep walking, I’m on
your tail,”

and I thought

“go figure…”

back of store,
small anteroom,
holding poetry,
asked "do you have McKuen?"
and he said
"maybe one or two....just
look around"

so in this small room,
dim lights,
a small reading chair

books marked down,
down,
down…

crooking my head sideways
to read titles

I touched
two,

found myself
again

Listen to the Warm
Lonesome Cities...

to add these
to the two I have...

Coming Close to the Earth
Celebrations of the Heart

now I am a little happier....

I missed Sloopy....

but no longer....

I hadn’t realized I could
be transported so easily
backwards

now, to find Stanyan Street

my quest has only begun

for I do not want
e-bay prices
and the easy way out

I want to find a copy
inscribed

that felt the hands
caught the tears
heard the sighs
invigorated the heart
captured and let fly
the mind

of another poet

it’s okay of stains
or a dog’s ear
or two

it’s okay

it’s coming home

that’s what counts

someday, I will have
them all.

wonderful place to be, a small coffee shop, delicately turning the pages and admire. Soft music playing as you close out the world around you to appreciate...  LP

and my one thousand and one post  will be on this wonderful work of yours, Karilea.  I've been to many a book store such as you mention.  I collect antique books and have one autographed by Tennyson, my favorite poet.  In fact, the book is mentioned in one of my poems.  I wish you well and enjoyed this very much, my friend.

I love it! Another bibliophile!! Good cafe and books is just what the doctor ordered on Sunday mornings.

McKuen = I think there is no more romantic contemporary poet  -
if you cease to find - every word you write - will become a McKuen legacy
- so = don't stop

you should see how many books of poetry I have that I've bought from used book stores and from book sales at the local library. . .

and now, to wonder what was going through the mind of the person that had them before I?

well done my friend. . .

I have a lot of old second hand books myself, and I never could figure out how someone could part with a book of poetry, that always amazed me.  I loved this and it is my favorite thing to do before attacking the antique shops on Sundays.  Loved it!

This is interesting...I was just thinking that I never read poetry except on line here...I own no poetry books...however I was considering buying Paul McCartney's poetry book that just came out...also contains his songs which are definately poetry...James

Karilea~
CELEBRATIONS OF THE HEART ... one of my favorites ...

I'm so pleased to have loving family who have seen to it that I have all of Rod's books.

Hoping that those notes I scribbled in the margins ...
will someday fill the hearts of my children with smiles.

Like you, I sift to find those books that were loved by others.

Wonderfully nostalgic read, my friend.

Sunshine.....YES!!! ...."It's Raining...." Give me a rainy day, a fine cup of coffee (tea actually)....and Rod McKuen's "Listen to the Warm" album....and I'm set. Such a treat to find a kindred appreciation. Thanks much. Needed this today.  Bob

Just couldn't resist adding my words to this great story of a weakness that I still have. I like it that you use such structure in the positioning of your words.  I'm a line by line guy(as you know), but want to think about the message in that form of presentation.  KJ
