Everything I Never Could Become

(with thanks to Michael Auguste for the inspiration of his poem, "Let Me Be")

Let me be the finger of a child
on fogged up window
or the sky as it turns
from blue to indigo.

Let me be the scent of rain
on freshly planted soil,
the smile of pride that emerges on a face
after all that toil.

I’d like to be vibration from thunder
in the clouds,
or the sound of violins
falling on a listening crowd.

I could be giggles of children
in pool’s hot summer stay,
the cry of seagulls from the pier
on a fisherman’s lucky day.

If I was the boat’s anchor
pushed by oceans sway,
I could see the splash that glistens
in the water as dolphin’s play.

I think I’ll be the bursting bubbles
from the Champaign tray
shared by newlyweds and friends
on a wedding day.

I love the fragrant perfume
that lingers on you hair,
so during a shampoo let me be
the fingers there.

Let me be whispered words of love
on a park bench,
the pride of a farmer viewing
his harvest from the fence.

Let me be the constant snap
in the bubble gum
of a boy who just made
his very first home run.

Let me be the skin
under fingertips caress,
the crinkling sound of taffeta
on a daughter’s dress.

Let me be the fluttering heart beat
after a first kiss,
the liquid in the straw
that everyone calls chocolate bliss.

Let me be the pause between
will you marry me and yes,
the glowing love in eyes
behind the veil in wedding dress.

Let me be a message in a bottle
for awhile,
or the first word of a baby
that makes a daddy smile.

Let me be words, "Love me tender"
from an Elvis Presley song
or lead me in a dance around the room,
I’ll be the gown.

Let me stop this, let me now
before I do succumb
to becoming almost everything
I never could become.

Sometimes to simply be isn't enough, and your writing makes the things you wish to be tantalizing. I loved this.

I kept trying to pick one I liked best - took me 10 minutes but there is my choice!  Lady, you are all of those things and more!  We are truly blessed by your gift.  Thank you.

Martie, you simply amaze me ... your incredibly wonderful imagery cascaded throughout this wonderful poem, over and over. Like Mysteria, I too tried to choose my favorite lines, but they were all delightful and so very vivid. I think the little baseball player snapping gum brought me the biggest grin, but they ALL made me smile. A thank you to Michael for his inspiration to you ... I adored this piece!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Delightful - Thisa line of thinking - could lead to a "round" - wherein - poets add their own verses - making a piece that just goes 'on' - Perhaps I presume too much - but I believe you innspire us all = this is a treasure for me regardless

We are the stories we tell so very well, all this and so much more. What an innovative take on existance passing as life. Superb!

Oh I don't think so sweetheart.....those are not things you never could become because you're already a part of all of them as you have just proved by writing this wonderful poetic work. Another fine work done in the open hearted Martie style!

Believe me you are a part of all those things in your own special way!
