Torn Valentine

The violin of skin strums melodies 'neath satin sheets
sparked by carriage rides, candlelight and cinnamon sweets,
all this and more, in celebration for February's Holiday,
yes, I'm speaking of Saint Valentine's Day!

I have always believed that Cupid was by my side
leading me in the right direction as my loyal guide,
but, alas, to my surprise, this has never been true
as a friend in disguise, he faded my red heart to blue

I placed my dearest fantasies into his wishing well
but, with shrills of laughter, he tore them all to hell!
every year, I sent him my longings in a letter
yet, they came back, marked..."return to sender"

It seems as though my skepticism and tears
comes from all those wasted years
searching and waiting for my one true love,
only to fight a losing battle, cursed from above

I'm always the understudy in beauty's play
with no romance, no chocolates, not even a simple bouquet,
oh matchmaker, you can be so cruel
I end up playing the role of the fool

You never send good luck my way
especially when needed most on this lover's holiday,
no midnight strolls through the park, no dancing, no long stem roses
it never fails, the door to bliss always closes

Oh, when will my dream come true?
my dear kindred one, where are you?
You must unlock my heart, I need to be set free!
I beg of you, winged Venus, please give him the key!

And, if I have to hear another ballad, I'm gonna be sick!
It serves to remind me that I'm the last apple from the orchard to be picked,
just this once, Cupid, can you help me?
show me the way to my earthly Eros, so I can be his Psyche

Cupid, you must cease this sorrow,
you missed, yet again, piercing my heart with your arrow,
that's it! I'm pleading my case to a higher authority!
God, create for me a sweetheart to hold for eternity

I yearn for my prince charming to bring my glass shoe,
yet, he's no where in sight. A Cinderella without her prince? Can this be true?
It's so unfair, Cupid, others are safe in the arms of their soulmate,
here's my gift to you, my torn valentine...I have no faith in fate

I see that all along, I've been striking my matches in vain,
my desire is dulled, spirit's fire is weak with rain,
you never allowed me to skip upon the sands of paradise,
the innocent optimism within is now chilled in ice

Turquoise eyes weep for this torn valentine
deprived of "I Love You" and "Will You Be Mine?"
This golden fairytale still has a blank page
as I stand with empty arms upon reverie's stage

So, here, take my life, drown it in the sea
obviously my knight wants no part of me!
alone, as usual, no home for my soul,
enough already, Cupid! Your story is never quite whole

And so, it goes, always a bride's maid, never a bride,
to the world, I smile, loneliness, I hide,
I've kissed a few frogs and too many swines
this job is meaningless to my breath, it now resigns!

Why, oh why, did you break my heart?
You led me on, right from the start!
This overated day has come at last,
Cupid, you lil' trickster, you can kiss my a**!

My decision is final, I have given up!
why should I hope, when I'm destined to sip from dissapointment's cup,
I seem to be the troll where fairies dance and angels play,
my heart dies a little more each Valentine's Day

Melissa,

Oh how well I can ALWAYS relate to your poems.  Believe me, cupid is no friend of mine as well.  I have missed your writing sooo much. It's good to read it again.

I have to agree
Cupid's but a jerk
just a little rascal
behind that smirk

"The violin of skin strums melodies 'neath satin sheets

This is beautiful!!  I loved the read!

subconsciously, i think i can eat so much to make my stomach hurt, instead of my heart.
