20/20 Vision

I remember waiting for you
in my thoughts on that
unusual snowy day in April,
worrying that it would delay my timing
or that the moment would be canceled.
I had no fear in me, yet there you were
a stranger coming towards me.
So tall, dressed in black,
and the sunshine pouring over me,
almost blinding me to your view.

I never knew what was to come.
Wasn't prepared for all that followed,
taking months, a mystery to unravel
before me. Like a roller coaster ride,
highs, lows, thrills, and chills,
time in memory recorded it all.
My mind now, nothing but a digital camera
storing, and able to select at will
those special moments that brought me joy.
Or those that filled my eyes with tears
wondering how this could be happening to me.

I remember it all, from day one.
I know you do too, but not
with the same eyes...mine
of soft hazel, blue/ gray/green
with a hint of brown...
That hint I never noticed before,
in all these years of my life,
until mentioned to me
in a poem's description. How can one
not notice the colour of their own eyes?
How can I have not noticed
the path my life was going to take?
How could I  have been so blind...
when I had 20/20 vision?

I will remember it all, how you
once looked at me, following me
on the highway, slowing down
to catch up, getting my attention,
turning my head to see you staring at me
in the next lane...
Carrying my items in the computer store,
as if you were a schoolboy
carrying his "girls" books.
The tender way you would touch my cheek
with the back of your hand,
pull me to you, to kiss my lips,
the first time, our chins touching
leaving me with brush burns,
me having to stop at a department store
to buy something to ease the sting
and to cover up the redness on the way home.

I will remember watching you
as you ate across from me
learning your likes and dislikes...
sharing my first Krispy Kreme
that melted in my mouth
just like your kisses....
So many firsts, you showed me,
shared with me...Stopping in the park,
by the stream as twilight graced us
through all the trees, thrilling
to your touches, startled by it all.
At the Fair, riding the ferris wheel,
being kissed at the top...
watching the elephants share their talents,
your arm on my shoulder as I leaned into you.

That day at the park, almost missing one another
until last minute timing met up with us
giving me another day to share with you.
A warm, humid day, climbing the trail,
me grasping for every little tree
that could hold me, as I ran out of breath
from the incline, and thoughts of you
so near. Drenched several times over,
you had seen me at my worst...
not seeming to matter, as the storm came
and we waited it out...together
on the top of that mountain...
so electrifying were it's effects.

That ride along the trail, the first
on my bike in over five years
but for you, I practiced,
to be able to last the miles,
and the day was ohhhh so hot...
and me in my helmet, knowing
this first impression was not
to be a good one. Yet you said
not one word when I removed it
in that 90 degree weather. I thought now,
this is someone who knows how to care,
how to love, how to share.

I shall remember it all,
the firsts, and the lasts
and slide show them over and over
when the need arises to feel,
to know that I can do that, that
I still have that in me, that I am alive
with wants and needs and desires
and that I will hold onto them
until some day,I will no longer
need the memories, but will hold it all
again, right here in my hands.

Things may not always end to our liking but the memories, now precious to hold the memories in our hearts. Very well expressed, Wynter. A smile is worth a thousand words. Your poem is priceless. *S*

Wants, needs, desires, hopes, fears, and dreams.

I read this with great empathy.  It was easy since it flowed easily.  Memories are fine but the future sharing of the above is very much worth living for and toward which you should look.

I do so enjoy your writing.

The memories are what holds us, and what gives us strength to go on.  Well said M.
