It is not about the colored eggs
or playing hide and seek outdoors,
It is not about a bunny rabbit
dressed in pastels or hopping
on all fours.

It is not about an Easter basket
filled with shredded paper instead
of green grass hiding secret edibles
of marshmellow and chocolate delight.

It is not about the birth of spring
beaming warmth upon the land nor
of tulips, daffodils and cherry trees
suddenly come to bloom.

It is not about Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers
decked out in white jackets or new bonnets
while dancing through the streets
of another Easter parade.

Each holiday comes to tell us something special
and Easter comes to tell of Pesach, the gift
of Passover and of the many lives spared.

The answer to the meaning of Easter
is on my plate you see. The central theme
of Pesach is the matzah, for bread rising
is synonymous with mankind's pride.

Passover is the story of believing
beyond reason and logic, not because it
is proven or told us, but because we have
been spared the death of our children,
our hope, our tomorrows.

Each year we gather at the seder
to partake of the wine, the bitters,
prayer and the song. We sing in celebration,
of grace, the passing of another year.
We take notice of the faces not present
and those just newly arrived.

Pesach is a time of recharging our spiritual souls.
After Passover, we posses the power to engage
the world and its challenges, the world of facade,
the world of bread.

Ilu hotzi-hotzianu hotzianu mi-
Mitzrayim hotzianu mi-Mitzrayim

"The blood will be a sign for you
on the house where you are; and when
I see the blood I will pass over you."

Dear Julian,  I like you poetry and the meaning behind it.  It's theme is similar to one I have on Spiritual Journeys.  Have you found that corner yet?  Just look for it under Main Forums and Corner Pub too.  They don't move so breathtakingly fast as this one and we have more time to read everyone's poems.  This one is exciting though.  Love, Joyce ( I see you're from Seattle. I live at Mount Vernon, WA )

Joyce: thank you for the tip. I wasn't sure where to post this really. Mt. Vernon, gee that's just a hop, skip and a jump from me. Wishing you a blessed Easter and soul's renewal.

Kay: One of the important things about renewals: they really do make us stop our busy lives for a few days and re-prioritize.
Thank you for your comment.

Very well done, this portrayal of your celebration of Passover. I'm a Christian so I've never celebrated it, but thank you for sharing it with all of us.

Thank you Kate and Fading away for your kind words. It was a fun write. Up until 325AD passover equaled Easter. So Easter celebrating the risen Christ is relatively new given the change in calendars. Glad you enjoyed it.
