The Golden Isle

by Michael

They're shaped by years of storms at sea
These ancient Live Oaks hold their place
On guard, adorned with Spanish moss
For another that they might face

Above the strandline high on dunes
They watch in breezes, sea oats sway
And hold this isle with mighty roots
To keep the sand from washing 'way

On hot and humid, sultry days
Oasis in the blinding heat
The seagulls gather under them
To rest and cool their tender feet

These oaks protect my memories
Of Jekyll Island where they stand
These windswept oaks that called to me
When but a child and now a man

Since childhood did this shore I roam
So much it is a part of me
The only place I've felt at home
This tiny island in the sea

Across the flooding, rushing tide
Salt marshes stretch beyond my sight
A hundred thousand years unchanged
Since this ocean's womb first saw light

Jekyll is called a Golden Isle
And gold it's always been to me
A place of peace to pause awhile
The oaks, salt marsh, tranquility

When young, the treasures home I'd bring
Of shells and driftwood that I'd find
But now the treasures I seek most
The sounds of sea and peace of mind

I'm coming home to this dear place
Some morning you may chance to see
This artist in her sweet embrace
As he paints or pens his poetry

A really nice 'coming home' piece, Michael.
You have captured it well.

Michael--The place in your heart that brings you peace is always remembered with a certain reverence...I hope time takes you to your place...for I love the thought of you there.  This is painted most beautifully, my friend.

Michael~
Oh ... did you ever touch a memory here ...

I adore this pristine area whose history abounds with artistic reminisce ...
Mistletoe Cottage and Villa Marianna are two of my favorite places to visit there.

The ancient oaks draped in the mossy beards,
the beaches ...
the entire area is resplendant in it's offerings of serenity.

Thank you so much for this golden treasure of recall.
