Since All that exists...all that lives And throbs in the ecstacy of sunlight; Each small blade of quivering grass That points in stalwart valiancy To distant blue-flung heights; And every spring-clad tree whose boughs Hand etched in patterned silhouette Against a bannered sky, Are wrapped in toneless darkness now, As though, by ruthless strength, Gigantic hands had swept away The light. But phantom shadows stay Whose stillness fills the depths themselves With soundless sobs. Storms are lulled to passive quietude; No drip of moisture beats in rhythmic fall, And winds lie dead on unknown crags To call no more. No recompense Of laughter breaks to silvery echo Through the lassitude of night; Songs rest unborn, and tears are dry... While even Death, fear conquered, Turns in velvet stealth to seek Far fairer fields than mine. |
