the ink in the well was
but a cloud of blue dust

if I mixed it with water
I could have perhaps
written a poem
about a restful lake
on a peaceful night
when the moon shone
and ripples gleamed
in happy smiles
or perhaps a love story
that had roses
and candle light dinners
on autumn nights
many times over

instead I
licked my index finger wet,
and dipped it in that blue dust
and wrote your name
on the wall
recently whitewashed
and did that once again
and once more,
over and over
till the blue of the ink
became the blue of the blood
of a hurting finger
while deep inside remained
the hurting deep blue
of a vaguely beating heart

soon your names became
hard to erase
so I let them remain
while each day and night
I stared at the wall
with unflinching devotion
like a child learning
a lesson by heart

then came times when
the next women in my life came -
and they left as they had come too
but not before together we had
repainted the walls
even hid your name
under colourful wall papers
many times over

but, some things never die
and I can still read
the name in blue,
written so many times over
especially when the
night is calm
and I feel cold

how the blue reminds
why holiday seasons
are not meant for me
