by the way, i was missing in action for a while,
but im back.
an opinion is nothing more than a fly
with its wings pulled off by an alibi;
we fill our shelves with these hollow
things carved of wood. i can't swallow
the way you look at me.
(it's half past three.)
the phone rings and the carvings are lit
like torches or bones. how they throw a fit!
little splintered effigy, tell me your eye's desire;
there is a reason you've been set afire.
what priestess believes in you?
(it's half past two.)
speaking incantations, oaths, and spells;
they conjure the story your lonely eye tells.
i'm afraid i won't understand; and by then you'll be wasted,
to begin with, you were only pasted;
soon you will be a frightening pile of ashes.
i reach for the broom. your flame flashes.
i am scared to battle, i am scared to turn away;
but convinced you hold power, you curse this day.
anyway, i tell the others the trap has been set,
and the carvings burned. the jury has met.
all agree that the verdict is guilty as stone,
the carvings are gone. i'm all alone.
i see the judge for the first time in disguise.
he sets my fate with his bright hand. i rise.
i see the sun.
(it's half past one.)
O judge, bid compromise.
