You smile like the Cheshire cat,
trying to conceal the truth
behind meaningless chatter
and feigned consideration.

The sharing of life and love
teaches the art of discernment;
seeing what is always believed
to be invisible.

Your secrets are your lifelines
to a past you refuse to forget;
clinging to memories
with unnatural desperation
while searching for new hideaways.

Snippets of telephone chatter
and the clacking of the keyboard
speak louder to me
than your casual conversation.

Your mask is always the same;
frustrated confusion
at my ability to know the score,
even before your game begins.

Being able to see the game before it is even played out can be a painful talent. I hate games, except chess...and I often lose that game to my daughter.

Thank you both for the kind words

And I lie here in bed all alone- I can't mend
And I fear tomorrow will be okay
