As he holds her close,
She says 'you mean everything to me',
But he can't understand what everything means,
Even though he says it back she fills with emptiness,
Because she knows he will never understand,

As she starts to cry,
He says 'I'll love you forever',
But she can't believe in someone else's forever,
When she says it back he fills with hopelessness,
Because he knows she will never believe,

"I'll build a wall if we can keep them on the other side"-NIN
"There is no always forever"-The Cure
"Even the losers get lucky some times"-Tom Petty

Aargh! Take thy beak from out my heart! This was wrenching.
Futility and hopelessness are my favorite themes in poetry (and film and literature, etc...). You describe them in essence.

Awwwwww...this is deeply emotional.  Almost made me cry a little bit.  I know how you feel...it's a terrible thing I do to myself though.  I'm glad you could let all this emotion out in so few words.  ~~Jamie

So sad when anyone is to frightened to take a gamble in the love/stakes compartment.  This moved my soul...  but then the rational side of me says - "Is there really a forever?"
Sorry LOL must be my mood today...

Hi...I really enjoyed your poem.  Why can't we believe what other people say even when we really want to and even when they mean it?  Its so sad...thanks for putting my feelings into words.

Ginners, awesome, can really relate to this, sometimes forever is not as far as we would imagine, trust is something gained.

Oh wow...how sad. It's a reality though and that's why it'll hit so many people hard.
I did enjoy it though very much and I'm glad that I came across it.

Thanks for posting this and keep writing.
