One Room at a Time

Almost all of the clutter is gone
just a little dust
swept under the rug
where I wrote my name
but when I let the carpet fall
pieces of me flew across the room

I am tired of all this house cleaning
I am resting against pillows looking for words
and clean flannel sheets make a mountain
as I study to form a thought

Books are stacked all around
I tell them to watch the clutter that captures
and covers them with dust
for this room can be so treacherous

Did you rise from a desktop
strewn with discontent I ask them
or march across the page with my old friend determination
perhaps you were smoldering in the ashes of some fire
singed and unsure for  years
if so I totally understand

Tell me
how did you get past the clutter
the desk strewn with unpaid notions
and the drawers of unanswered questions

Then as I drifted back past my lashes
I heard the answer

Just climb this flannel mountain
over the lethargy that eats words for dinner
and clean one room at a time

My daughter in law  has a small plaque proclaiming "Warning - This house protected by killer dust bunnies!" No question- I should have one here - Enjoyed this very much - I started '1 room' 8 months ago - progress is slow ~G~

Karilea--I thought maybe you would be able to relate.

dgvarner--If it was very neat, then it wouldn't be such a mess..   thanks

But Sea...YOU are superwoman.

Marge--thanks so much sis...you know how much I appreciate you.

Bill--One room can sometimes be overwhelming...depends on the room, I guess.  Maybe I can put those dust bunnies to work.

Denise--What a good idea...so sorry you could relate.

cleaning and sleeping are such a waste of perfectly good poetry time
curl up in those flannel sheets and write me girlie...
and if any body asks..tell em I said so!!
love the wit and wisdom in this
me

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought,
I summon up remembrance of things past ...
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought.

Clutter??????????  What is that?  I thought that letting all that stuff pile up was just adding a blanket of warmth to the house.  Wonderful write my friend.  You got to start somewhere and it might as well be with penning one of your magical poems to instead of diving straight into the mess.  I for one am glad you did.

Janet and Mark--you guys are so great...wanta come and help?  Actually, this poem isn't about the clutter of real rooms, but the clutter in my mind...sigh..I guess my metaphore was a little too obscure...huh?
That's what happens when you're filled with clutter.
