I Remember [#1]

you
were so
very beautiful
and he
so very
handsome

in cotton dress
all white
with green leaves
and soft yellow
lemons
as decoration

full skirted
the wind sweetened
the outline
of you
thin legged
you were, yes,
a worrisome
feature,
or so you thought

but in my eyes

I wanted to be
just like you

and he

O he was
Gable and
Cooper in one
a tall drink of water
but back then
I would not have
known to use
that as a measurement
of the handsome
that he
emoted

but it would have
been correct,
as we lived in
that state of states
where everyone
in every other
state thought
that all who live
there
must be
an actress
or an actor

and you two
sure showed them
your midwestern
roots

by staying married
and committed,
by doing
what 95 percent
of the other
folk were
doing

none of them
actors
or actresses

but for me,
I remember,
if he cocked his
hat just right,
he was a little bit
of Bing
and if you
wore some makeup
just right
why you were
Queen of Everything

and most certainly
the Nile

for he would have
built you that barge
for your heart of
him was that large

yes, I remember
that pretty frock
and the way he
walked
the quiet you two
talked

and I visit the
smiles of you
often

No actors...just simple folk and, in their simplicity, the show goes on....excellent writing..
