Remember that cabin in Yosemite?
A Lincoln Log dream,
scented in pine and surrounded by quiet.
(Except for that night, when the bears came out.)

Remember that night
when our heads were spinning from the wine
and we lay in bed listening?
Outside our window
we heard bears grunting and growling,
their heavy footsteps creaking the wood on the porch
while they searched for food.

Remember how we panicked,
and ran naked into the living room
to huddle
like frightened cavemen
in front of the dying fire?

Oh and how we giggled like children then.
We laughed as silently as we could
half-way believing that at any moment
the bears would burst through a window
in a ravenous rage
and snatch us from our Eden.

As we waited for the door to splinter
or the glass to shatter,
I followed the shadows
that danced across the ceiling,
along the walls
and found your eyes,
wide with excitement,
flickering and darting with the flames.
I felt your soft skin
next to mine,
warmed by the golden embers.

And then,
the bears no longer mattered.

Remember that?

That was long before our own monsters
burst through the window
and devoured our love.
yet, still
I know
that no matter where we are
or who we are with,
that night
is in a paradise
kept only for us.

A paradise remembered
whenever one of us needs
a
good
warm
laugh.

I am so glad I caught this one! I have a deep fascination for bears.

"That was long before our own monsters
burst through the window
and devoured our love" - EXCELLENT!

You held onto a beautiful moment, and gave it life, in this write. I applaud!

I love the imagery in this! You really brought the moment across. Sure sounds like a warm ember that will glow in your heart for a long time to come.

Sounds like my kind of paradise.

This treasure is the first of your poems I have read, I believe. Irony, written with a ticklish feather pen. The smoothness of your work here allows the reader to be submerged in the humour and excitement of the moments with threat of bear only to reemerge, momentarily, upon the surface of sadness, a willing participant in the drama of your poetic vignette. Lovely and full of human nature. Thanks for it.

I could tell you a story about my ex-husband and I that would get erased but you get the idea, a similar funny times shared. I often reminisce of that night we got caught in a rather embarrassing situation and laugh. And how true this is, as I have heard from others he often tells this story too, and it has been a long time since we were together. I really enjoyed this, and the bears!

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. I enjoyed reliving this and sharing it with you.
Sometimes it's nice to know that even after a relationship has grown sour, there are still memories that can be warmly recalled.
