It’s Over
Virginia Salter

there, it’s over
yet why does it not feel finished
why do I still feel the dust
slipping from my fingers

why does the door
sound like it’s opening
to a hollow, empty room
and my footsteps echo
in my ears

how did the kitchen
become such a mess,
and the smell,
soiled dishes lying
all over the counter

maybe if I wash them
my hands will feel clean again
maybe then it will be over

I pick up your cup
lipstick stains
mirror your kiss
your kiss, no longer mine to touch,
to feel. . . to return

the aroma
stale coffee mixed with
the taste of your lips

I know it’s silly
I know it’s bizarre
but I can’t,
I just can’t wash this tonight

maybe tomorrow
when I know it’s over
and I have to start anew
without you

to the reader, this is contrived, but it is inspired in part by an actual loss

Contrived? I loved this! I have a 'coffee cup' of my own. I guess there are some parts of our lives we just need to hold onto a little longer. Thanks for this, I really enjoyed it. (You don't still think I'm Hannibal do you...Ha!)?
