Desert Passage
Virginia Salter

basalt knobs rise
out of straw-yellow grasses,
vie for space among
olive-drab sage

miles and miles
of desert growth reigns
‘neath pastel shades of blue
edged with cottony billows

high rock faces
stand above the desert floor
ribbon of road trims the land
along river’s banks

lake after lake,
of Columbia formed,
teem with life,
bring same to land’s yield

Love beautiful desert scenery you have so skillfully painted here. Having lived in the desert at one time I know why one can write poetry that portrays its beauty.

Awesome picture! Never been there, but you present it with more depth than any photo could...a lovely journey - thank you!

Thank you, laryalee and jwesley.  Would you believe, j, that this was inspired by the desert of eastern Washington State?  East of the cascades in Oregon and Washington is quite desert like.
