Stopping Time

In a passage in Anita Shreve’s book “The Weight of Water”, a photographer and a poet meet (and ultimately fall in love). He, the poet notes at their meeting that they both are in the same occupation: “trying  to stop time”  Hence this piece.

This weekend past I flew to Monterrey California. Without pad, pen or computer on film I hope I captured a Greek Orthodox Confirmation, Christening and Wedding (renewal of vows). (My niece married a wonderful husband from a Greek family).
The ceremonies were lengthy but beautiful and moving.
While there I took my camera also to Cannery Row – and snapped the ‘tree lighting ceremony – and the children playing on a snow pile (many had never seen snow) imported for the occasion.
Visited Carmel where small charming homes you’d think ought to cost $100-300k – sell for millions … at the beach saw crazy people actually in the freezing water, and a beautiful mermaid sculptured in the sand.
Drove the 17 mile drive by Pacific Grove and immersed myself in the ‘feel’ of incredible surf on a beautiful sunny day and enjoyed seeing the Pacific display itself in colors from turquoise to black to white with such splendor words fail my pen.
These are but a few of the things I hope to “stop time” with, using words I pray will poetically capture these events. Here’s the first:

Stopping Time

I’ll forever remember when time first stopped
Your words of love upon me you dropped
Breathless I was for my heart stopped too
From that moment on my love for you grew

In your words poetic I saw heaven rent
The light of your eyes celestial sent
Whispers we exchanged though shackled by life
Dreams of loving ‘neath shutters deny our strife

There are places inside our souls -
that have never been touched.
There are places inside our hearts -
that need to be loved this much.
