Looking back,
I can think,
Of the last time I really saw you.
It was in my car,
And you were commenting,
On how you liked it,
And how well the heater worked.
Thoughtfully pondering my pen collection,
Scattered about the car,
Telling me about how much you loved,
Different kinds of pens,
And showing me some of your best.
I watched you,
Amused and pleased,
Wondering if you had noticed,
How much I had grown,
Since you last knew me,
And wondering,
If you knew how much,
I had forgiven you,
For terrible things.
I had resolved long before then,
To love you anyway,
Because family can't turn away,
And if God could forgive,
Then who was I not to?
I wonder if you knew,
How much I treasured you.
Video games and plastic canvas,
Mingle within my memories.
Lights out exactly when you said so,
And nights spent awake,
Giggling with secrecy,
That I was awake against your demand.
Hot nights and box fans,
Blend in my mind,
With ice cubes wrapped in wash clothes,
To stay cool and fall asleep.
Frosted glass mugs,
Wrapped in freezer coldness,
Awake in my senses,
As fresh as the milk,
You liked to pour into them.
I used to think that was so silly,
And now my husband does it.
Mom has your coffee pot,
Your pictures, and your hats,
Among other things you left behind.
An uncle has your guitar,
That you once played,
While I sang a song,
I had learned in Sunday school.
Trusted friends have your treasured pet,
That quivering little dog,
And all I have are tangible memories,
Floating randomly,
And sometimes suddenly,
Within my "missing you' mind,
And my "hearing your whistling" voice.
Almost a year has passed,
Since this earth knew your good spirit,
And listened to your hearty whistling,
And I can say,
I loved you,
And I forgive you.

I just thought I'd take a break from English essay writing and say what a wonderful job you've done conveying your feelings.  Your true feelings.  The ones that are so tangible you can touch them, I envy you those.

Temptress,
There's healing here.

This forgiveness is very powerful...I was visiting my friend Maria today at the restaurant where she works and she was just glowing and I ask her what was going on because normally she acts more sad and moody...I ask her if she had a new boyfriend, was her boyfriend making her happy or was she making herself happy....she said it was herself finding happiness...she told me she had decided to forgive her ex and stop blaming everything on him...now she can see part of it was her fault and she is like a different women...good for her and good for the children..she said now her children want to go visit there dad...James

What a beautiful style you have in your writing, Jenn. The way you set up the lines...describing his actions, her thoughts while watching him, details of the surroundings and tying them all together written in such a human, realistic manner is very, very impressive. I admire you very much...
