i. calgary in the summer
The girl I love lives in Calgary.
She sent me a newsprint picture of her city.
Sky black to blue to purple to red,
toy buildings standing under shadow,
picked small lights.

I can't smell the ozone,
taste the lightning,
feel the window
where we touch the glass.
I can't see her
or hear her voice
unless it's photos, tapes,
time going slowly, last.

The girl I love lives in Calgary.
I want to reach her through the sky.
But I must wait for the plane,
or take a train
to see her, and look her in the eyes.

I can only imagine the life in the city
in painted hues, under summer storm.
I can only imagine the taste of her lips
and us in bed, alive and warm.
I can only recall her songs to me,
but don't have her face to place them to.
Soon enough, but not soon enough,
I will be there for you.

(i love you, too)

ii. love to lori
It flows through me:
her voice when singing,
or talking, or laughing, or crying, or praying.

She gave me a pendant
with a purple stone eye.

When have I been happy before
that it hasn't been taken away?
That I can write words simply,
knowingly, without care.

The pendant is right over my heart.
I won't be sentimental –
but her love is a start.

iii. simply said
Writing these words tonight,
I realize we're not as damaged as we thought.
All the loss and broken pain,
purpled bruise and thickening knots.
It's not us.

It's our situation, being alone.
Because I realize the depths joy can go
when we talk on the phone.
Or just have dreams with each other in them.

We're gonna find
what everyone else seems to possess.
We're not a mess -- we're just in need
of something more.

So I hope we can find it with each other.
I hope we can find it within each other.
Simply said, we have a chance.

And I hope so too! The reality is, that you can do whatever you set your mind to do...and with words of love pouring from your heart out through your veins onto this page they seem to me to turn to tears of laughter...an admirable goal you seek and I'm behind you all the way...you have more than a chance... take care       ethome

and I LOVE when you write about love...you write longing beautifully!

Writing these words tonight,
I realize we're not as damaged as we thought. ---

smiling now. Not at all...Hugs you.

this poem means a lot to me because  I can well relate, the girl I love lives in Australia. Long distance relationships are hard. I wish you all the best and hope that one day you too will be together. wonderfully written poem.

It's in your eyes a fire that's wild and glorious
Unhibited, unfinished in everything I do Let the morning rise like our hearts desire" whipping boy
