The Gossip

A Cautionary Tale

There once was a woman, I'll just call her Mable
She would gossip, whenever and wherever she was able
The tales she would spread, Oh! The tales she told
Oh why? She cries, Why, am I now out in the cold?
She was thoughtless, that's the best thing I can say
Mable poor old Mable, Oh how she's having now to pay

The fault with her, I really think you will agree
Is in not thinking before she spoke. Don't you see?
Without a thought she just passed the gossip on
She believed that to gossip well, no harm's done
To pass on the tale might not seem all that bad
But I wonder don't you really think, my how sad?

Every word whether it's thoughtless, meant or not
Whatever it is, particually when the gossip is hot
Causes someone to think maybe this might be true
But how would you feel if it happened to one of you?
Wouldn't you feel rather hurt, angry and betrayed
Prefer to leave, even while wishing you'd stayed

Mable got her just deserts for certain you know
Words, the lies, it's not easy to just stop the flow
Poor Mable she's lost all her own friends it's true
They didn't want her to pass on their tales to you
She's discovered that gossip causes a lot of pain
Finally Mable said that she won't ever gossip again

Marsha

(Now I wonder if anyone believes her?)

True, gossip is poison to the soul, of the speaker and the hearer and, unfortunately, something we are all tempted to involve ourselves in, to some degree. Our ears always tend to perk up a bit when a juicy story is going around. Something we have to keep in check. Excellent expression, Marsha!

This has certainly happened to me, once it's said, people "believe" it.  I can relate to this one very well. Thanks for posting it!

Denise, you are so totally right the poison to the soul. Such a waste of peoples lives, I don't think until we are at the wrong end of a gossip, that we realise how awful it is.
Take care

Kari, you know exactly what I mean, love I know. Happen to you too? Remind me to tell you the sordid little story sometime, I mean now it makes me laugh but at the time it wasn't fun at all.
Look after yourself Kari, take care

Ron, maybe if we refused to listen to the wagging tongue it would stop wagging, I can only hope!

Kathleen, yep happened to me too, I wouldn't have minded but I really was innocent. Did stop the gossip though, now if only I'd had something juicy for them to gossip about.
Take care

Marcy, ah Marcella, you sound just like your name sake. Thanks kid

Take care
and my thanks to you all
