The Sounds of Autumn

The sounds of Autumn
Are rustling in the trees
And through the tall grasses
Of the meadow

Whistling winds, warning
Of things to come

Impending winter storms
Sleet and snow and ice
The cold, the despair
Threatening sounds
Of unknown peril

I didn’t need the wind to remind me
That this will be the winter of sorrow
That we will not sit again
In the fragrance of the spring meadow
Nor play together with the little ones
Under the shade trees of summer

I didn’t need the fluttering of leaves
To mark the coming of a new season,
A season of tears,
A season of loneliness

But deep in my heart I truly believe
That every time the wind
Rustles through the trees
I’ll remember your laughter
Every time the fall wild flowers and berries
Bend in the brisk autumn wind
I’ll recall your youthful spirit
Every tree and shrub
To survive the winter blast
Will remind me of your fortitude
Your character, your perseverance

Every crimson leaf
That dances and swirls
In a whirlwind of joy
Will remind me of the way
You made us laugh
Your spontaneous fun
Your improvised entertainment

And when all the leaves have fallen
No wind or gale will threaten me,
But will only call out my name
In whispered swirls and howling gusts

And I will remember you

Elizabeth Santos

Thank you for one of the most glorious poems I've ever read on Autumn, and one that made me cry, touched my heart and will remain printed out nearby where I can always read it.  It means something special to me.

This is an amazing poem - I've often tried to write about how a certain time of year can bring memories flooding back.  What a wonderful job you've done of showing that.

Liz- I almost wish I did not fully understand  then I would not be crying - but reveling in the beauties of autumn you've so wonderfully described. {{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}

Elizabeth,
You are a dream, what deep thoughts, what perfection. You are blessed.

ROFL!!! Well, Elizabeth, you just blew your cover as a poet who cannot write free verse. There is no form of the art of writing you cannot master....this poem is proof of that

Elizabeth, I'm so sorry for your pain. If there were anything I could do, I would do it, but you seem to have already dealt with it in the best way you can. God bless you.

Liz--How my heart hurts in reading this poem, yet it is full of the beauty you see and the love that you feel...so I also feel amazed at the person that you are.  Hugs!
