Signs of portent oft' appear
in that which is o'er-looked
In retrospect too late we see
just how our goose was cooked

The hieroglyphs of reason
un-recognized for haste
A spice that's used to season
may extract as well as baste

Examine close ingredients
by means of such inspection
At the loss of some expedience
we may yet follow directions
