(this is a true story)

  A Love Story

A wooden swan on a small lake
in the middle of central park
took the children round and round
then locked away at dark.

Its weathered wings had splintered
and its paint was wearing thin
but it was dearly loved and treasured
by all that rode within.

Its ritual went unnoticed
by all but special few
who appreciated nostalgia’s
winged watertight view.

Around the lake it wandered
enchanting little boat
when real swan became besotted
beside it would daily float.

Live swan became so amorous
he did a swan love dance
and showed his feathered passion
but he didn’t stand a chance.

She circled right on by him
with head still and erect
and the sounds of happy laughter
came from lovers on the deck.

He gave devotion faithfully
as steadily he swam
beside his love in circles
until dark and day’s end.

Then he curled up beside the place
where she was kept at night
to dream of finally capturing
his love in swan delight.

A swan mates for a lifetime
and wooden boats decay
now he searches the empty water
and waits for her today.

So faithful in his tribute
forever in his care
that he still swims circles daily
in the lake that they had shared.

Hey, is that where the song came from "Swanie, how I love ya, how I love ya"? Nothing is sadder that decaying love..maybe next time he should pick a plastic one!

Yes, Martie, I am officially losing it!

Actually, I love the story line and the way you presented it. Between you with the fake and real swan...and Sy with his chicken and cat, I'm waiting for someone to write about the hyena who wanted the giraffe but just wasn't up to it! Or the turtle who raped the snail and when the cop asked the snail what happened, she said "I don't know. It was all so fast!!!"

OK OK I'm gone. Thanks, Martie! I needed that!

Corinne and Pepper, thanks so much for your sweet comments.

Balladeer--Actually, it was Sy's poem that reminded me of this story I saw in the paper a couple of years ago...and as far as loosing it goes...well, you just should have gone dancing.

Oh, no, the poor swan!  It didn't have the sense it was born with - no, wait - let me think - most of our human kind fall in love just like that - unplanned and without thinking it through, full speed ahead - no one can deter love when it happens.  Poor, poor swan, though!
Excellent poem!  Really excellent!

Martie,

Well, they all's done used the good lines but I just wanted to say... I had to go to years of school to get any wit at all and I still haven't gotten anywhere with it. It must of been one of them classes like Algebra they thought we all needed. It's sad to find the life we've wasted swiming in circles.

If I could paint a portrait, of this life in which I've led, and somehow sketch a story, of the visions in my head, I'd start out with a canvas, stretched tightly in a frame, and in the bottom corner, I'd leave room to sign my name. (Michelle A. Bartley)
