  Playing Hooky

The sky was blue,
the sun was warm
and something called,
was it the wilderness?
Maybe, ‘twas serendipity
who walks in periodically
to take a bow on a day like this.

Lets go fishing, my man said
and I smiled as he searched the garage
for poles and tackle,
then we had to buy a license…
takes time to do these
spur-of-the-moment things.

Gone are
the good old days
when you walked down to the creek
with you ball of string
and worms dug from the garden.

Actually, the garden has many worms,
but we want to keep them there
for the soil, you understand.

So a ten minute ride to a lake
in the middle of LA county,
can you believe it?

What a feast!
If you squinted just so
you could believe you were
far away from the city,
and it was pretty the way
the telephone wires
dissected the sky.

I didn’t catch fish,
although I had day-glow worms,
they glowed in the dark underbelly
of the lake where the big fish lurk,
at least I guess that’s what they do,

but I did catch some poetry.

Poetry, in the line of maple trees
across the top of the green hills,
and in the speed-dive of the terns,
poetry in the graceful flight of heron
and in the gentle nesting of the ducks.

The birds were a symphony
punctuated by a splash
as a fish jumped
right by my descending dangling
tasty green worm.

A kite trysted with the air
with fairy wings
and children somewhere added
just the right delicious joy.

Did it matter that the man
standing nearby fly casting
caught a twelve inch bass
and threw it back?
no, of course not

cause, I caught poetry
and we are having pork chops
for dinner.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

this is so great Martie and yes you are the one person we know that catches inspiration where ever she goes...
and Id rather taste on of your poems than an old fish anyway *S*
creative work here.
take care, jm

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

You are soooooo delightful !

'takes time to do these

This is just a sample of the great angler you are.  Catching phrases such as this in sheer delight .. qualifies you for the
Catch and Release queen for a day !

Your poetic bait always reels me in, Martie.    Loved the subtle ironies, the lesson in appreciation...grand writing.

Marty,
This is the most wonderful poem! Every one who writes poetry should read this. It's one of my favorites and should be included in your first volume of poetry, but then they all should. But this is very special
