Sitting on my suitcase, beside a Texas road;
I didn’t have a dollar in my jeans.
I had no place I had to be, nor place I had to go.
I guess my staple diet was Campbell’s Pork and Beans.

We used to call it living free, and doing as we pleased.
But miles and years have left those days behind.
And now I have a bank account, responsibilities…
The old days still rest easy on my mind.

I saw a lot of country back in those early years-
Arizona, and New Mexico.
At night, wrapped in my bedroll, I shed a lot of tears…
Drifting was the only kind of life I used to know.

If that was really living, somewhere I must have died.
I must confess I still get itchy feet.
There’s still a restless longing, I keep bottled up inside,
To spend my life out where the sky, and far horizon meet.

And you make it sound so wonderful ...
it's no wonder.
