Across the wide midwestern plains-
Oglalla bands once roamed.
Nomadic tribesmen on the move-
The land they called their own.

And farther South, Apaches, too…
Once roamed the barren sand.
As vanished, as the buffalo-
From this, their native land.

The Utes, Comanche, Nez Perce’
And half a hundred more-
Have joined the bison herds in death.
And no one keeps the score…

And ere I put my pen away-
Ere the last die, be cast-
I’ll toast the things we did not learn-
From follies of the past.

We never do learn do we? I enjoyed this. My husband would appreciate the history of it I believe too.

Nothing can deter a poet, for he is actuated by pure love. Who can predict his comings and goings? "Thoreau"

I truly enjoyed this one.  It's a difficult task to convey so much emotion and teach a lesson at the same time.  You have done just that, and with such apparent ease.

There were a few million Incas, Aztecs and Mayans who would say amen to this poem, 'slinger.

What we didn't learn from peoples of the past will probably contribute to our eventual degeneration (and possible doom).  They knew how to be in harmony with all the elements.  We can't even carry a tune.

Good poem.  It's sad to think about all that is lost.

Who was it that said we learn from our mistakes? They were so WRONG!
GS you've wrapped up a lesson in your woven words. It is really sad to think about what has been done. Sad as looking forward and seeing what we're now or even not doing.

It would be wonderful if more people learned from their mistakes. Great writing, John.
