Sitting in Michael's Lap

0 posted 2000-04-17 02:50 AM

I have a secret love -- can’t hide it any longer --
For every moment of each day, it’s getting stronger;
I really can’t deny that I am hopeless captured,
And it would be a lie to say I’m not enraptured.
Each morning when I wake, the first thing that I think of
Each step my bare feet take, one closer to my drink of
Choice ....

Have you a dearest friend who’s hopeless in the morning?
A grouch unto the end, and ev’ry scowl a warning?
Until he has his fix, you fear for being bitten --
And then, just lightning-quick, he’s playful as a kitten?
The demon is caffeine, an unacclaimed addiction --
Precursor of Visine, insominia’s affliction
Sold here ....

A thousand diff’rent forms, and each designed for keeping
My nights at less than norm, when smarter folks are sleeping --
A tablet once or twice, espresso or a soda:
The circles round my eyes are big as North Dakota;
My mind and body hurled, though never do they match up --
And I could rule the world, if only it could catch up
To me ...

So , innocents beware, and keep your watch behind you:
For we are everywhere, and quick enough to find you ...
Our teeth are slightly browned, our words a mile-a-minute
Our cups are never found without our weakness in it
With sugar or with cream, or CO2 and flavors,
Our ways will never seem like normalized behavior
To you ...

Now this may seem unwise, our sanity degraded,
But you must realize that sleep is overrated --
Eight hours you people snore, we sleep for -- tops -- an hour:
That leaves us seven more -- I tell you, that is POWER!
Insomniacs, unite! This foul reproach we’ll weather --
(Althoughthewordsjustmightallseemtoruntogether)
Oh well ....

 Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange...

Oh man do we have this in common.  I know I'd probably bleed caffeine if you were to cut on me. And sleep is DEFINATELY highly overrated.

Oh, Chris - speaking of extra time, I finished you challenge tonight seeing as all of you abandoned me....  sleeping eh?
You owe me one now!!!

"Once I had a Secret Love. . ."  huh?   Oh, you mean it's not anything like that?  It's what?   WHAT?

Oh. . .ok. . .  well.. .this poem still was really good!  LOL

But you know. . .there are several decaffinated brands that are just as good as. . .*is immediately knocked down by caffeine junkies Kess and Michael*

Oh so clever, appropriate and wonderfully writ, Kess. Great work here!

There's even a website for insomniacs with a "poetry in the dark" section.

I love the part about bare feet. But I sure hate good tasting demons. Yea I'm hooked.
