Waving Again

"We must hang a huge flag," my husband said.
"Each holiday we'll unfurl it to wave
In honor of this country we so love
And our two sons who are soldiering brave."
Before our new home was happily built,
He cut and cured a tall, willowy tree.
He made a flagpole that would hold aloft
Our country's flag, flying proudly and free.
We were involved in the Viet Nam War;
His son and mine each signed up to serve.
They saluted and strode off gallantly.
I marveled at such bravery and verve.
My son was sent over to Germany,
With a desk job, he was safe from the war.
Stan's son was to fight in the worst of it,
Until wounded, he could battle no more.

At last they came home, my son unharmed,
Not so fortunate was Stanley's son, Dell.
Although his war wounds were mostly unseen,
He was not ever again truly well.
That flagpole came down over the long years,
To be painted and lifted high again.
I can still see the three in mind's clear eye
Taking it out of the stand and back in.
That flag flew high on every special day,
As well as many days coming between.
Each of these three died on a holiday.
The flagpole stayed quite denuded and lean.
Now our country is once again at war;
I hear urgings from the men of my past.
And so with the help of my grown grandson
I am going to raise that flag at last.

When we found a pine tree was now so tall
That its branches had grown into the way,
I hired an arborist to chop it down.
Their flag will fly this July holiday!

Joyce, my dear, the price for freedom is high but we must pay it regardless of the cost to ourselves. Your men knew this. God bless them and the United States of America.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
