On Silent Wings

Owls are nesting in a tree
Within our pastureland and they
Can be seen at dawn and dusk,
As they leave to hunt for prey.
Beneath the big spruce, pellets lie,
Like gray stones upon the grass.
Relics of their nightly feasts.
Collecting as the seasons pass.

Owlets, when they start to grow,
Screech for food with all their might
And walking near the tree we find,
Some stray feathers, soft and white.
They return each year although,
The nest now leans lopsidedly.
Clinging to the branches where
Once a great nest used to be.

This year, perhaps, will be the last
We will have them nest so near.
Once the owlets learn to fly,
On silent wings, they'll disappear.
But we will always listen for
Nocturnal, haunting hoots that say,
That though they've had to change their tree,
They don't plan to move away!

Joyce:  Thanks. We have  great-horned owls here and also barred owls.  Have seen pygmy owls a couple of times and they are so cute. They have eyes that look almost human.
