i found a bright red feather once
just sitting on the ground
i tried to find the bird that made it
but all was empty save the sound

i used to run with my new feather
pretending i could fly
soaring high above the clouds
getting lost in just the sky

then came the fearsome day
when i really had to try
had to beat my arms against the wind
had to leave the nest and fly

i started off with trembling hope
that all would work out right
and often I would catch the wind
and soar from noon till night

often though i have fallen
have gone screaming to the ground
too often there's been no one
to even hear the sound

the other day I found my feather
it still shines that crimson hue
I keep it near, close to my heart
though the story I'll share with you

i still pretend i fly the skies
there's not much i can do
cept clutch it tight and smile
for that what Dreamers do

" and I dream of her always,
even when I don't dream.
her name's on my tongue
and her blood's in my stream."

Soltice Son:  I like your poem and your red feather too. Dreams are wonderful, even when they don't come true. I keep a heart-shaped rock in my pocket.  It's my talisman,
since there are no red feathers to be found!

SolticeSon~
Oh the special feeling of touching the child in us all~

I also have a feather that has special meaning to me~

I am known by the Cherokee name of ~*Willow White Feather*~ ... it was said by my great grandmother that when the elder chief was to give me my name ... a white feather fluttered to his feet ... thus he picked it up and said that I would have the flexibility of the willow and have the purity of thought to soar on white wings~

My great kept the feather in my baby book and presented it to me when I turned 12 ... I've kept it since~

I've often thought it prophetic of the quill with which poetry is born~

Well ... your write certainly set me to a babble ....
thank you for the reminisce~

Enjoyed the write very much~
*Hugs*
~*Marge*~

I keep forgetting to take the door that's allowed from the Open Forum and venture into the Corner Pub...but when I do, now and then, I find keepers such as this!

A marvellous story -- the hope and pain of dreams lost and regained...a blessing to read!
Thank you for sharing this, Solstice Son...so wonderfully written!
