Even Echoes Die

What is it, bred in man, that makes
Him covet trophies so he takes
The horn from off the rhino's head,
The kudu, oryx and is lead
To kill the tiger, lion too.
We'll only see them in a zoo
If they go on the way they are.
Even when there's laws to bar
The sale of tusks and body parts,
There are still those with hardened hearts,
Who poach and feed the evil scheme
And now where wildlife used to teem,
Are echoes of the leopard's scream!
We hear from in a fading dream,
Gorilla's hoots and zebra's cries.
We witness as the thunder dies
From hooves that numbered thousands strong
And even echoes don't last long!
It doesn't matter where you go
In nature's kingdom, people know
That birds or beasts, or finny friend
Must all confront this tragic end.
One day as generations rise
Will come a time, to no surprise,
When animals succumb to men.
What will they prey on then?

Very well done, but I hope the lesson is learned before it reaches this stage.  Joyce

Betty,
WHAT INDEED? Good questions here, made me think of the sad massacre of helpless, beautiful animals in the name of SPORT? I am confident that those who sacrifice such innocent blood will one day be held accountable, but thanks for the wake-up call now. Dennis

Soaring Eagle: Thank you for reading my poem!
Every year here, during hunting season I hear stories of wanton disregard for animals by some of the hunters and it makes me so sad! Of course I know it goes on everywhere and for profit in many cases.

Joyce:  I too hope we wise up before all the animals are gone, but when you read the endangered species and extinct lists, it makes me wonder!

Dennis:  I appreciate your comments and agree with them.  This has never seemed remotely like "sport" to me!

Rex Allen McCoy:  I'm glad to hear you don't hunt.  I think the days are long gone, where people had to hunt to survive. Thanks for your comments.

BettyLou~
I know how fervently you feel this subject.
Well done, poetess~

And I feel so saddened that there are those who would wantonly destroy the creatures for the 'sport' of it~

Beautifully written and the message loud and clear...when will man learn to enjoy and revere all God"s creatures?  Love, Ellie

Marge:  Thank you so much for this message. I do care fervently about what happens to animals, both wild and domesticated. If I didn't have the family ties that I do, I'd probably be an animal activist in a more prominent way!
