River Man

Pell Simon is a woodsman,
So he always smells of smoke
And sometimes of cheap whiskey,
If he hasn't been too broke.
He can sneak up behind you
And you never hear a sound.
His ear is tuned to nature
And he sleeps upon the ground.
Buckskins he is wearing
Are from skins that he has tanned.
He lives upon the bounty
That he garners from the land.

He likes to follow rivers
And he knows the hidden lair
Of wolverine and cougar,
Of timber wolf and bear.
He's followed the St. Lawrence
And the Mississippi too.
The Cimmaron and Pecos,
To mention just a few.
He wanders where he pleases,
Though he likes the mountains best.
He always stops to see us,
When he comes here to the west.

In winter, he drifts southward,
For it's where the wild geese go.
The swans and ducks and others,
Who don't fancy life with snow.
It makes us somewhat mournful
When it's time to say good-bye.
There's always one more river
Or another trail to try!

I think perhaps he is a dying breed but I am glad for him, there is always one more river.  Very interesting poetry here, Betty.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  Thanks.  This is going back a few years in memory. Perhaps there are none of these wanderers left in this country?

Love

pegasus111:  Thank you very much! What a nice compliment!  Pell was a sporadic visitor to our house when I was young. We lived in northern Canada at the time and he was a real mountain man, except he loved to follow the wanderings of major rivers. Such an interesting life!

Dear Betty Lou

Australia has a few swagmen but as your mountain man Pell Simon, they are a dying breed.

I enjoyed this poem very much!

Love Verbena xo

Trillium,

What a privilege it must have been for you to have known and to have heard the adventurous stories of such a woodsman who lived off the land and who was one with nature and it does seem to me, by your poetic writings, that perhaps a bit of this man's woodsiness and wonderful wonderful love for nature has rubbed off on you a bit.

Smiles and God bless.

-Bob

Dear Bob:  This was about a long time ago, when I was a child, but he certainly made a lasting impression on me!  I looked forward to his visits and who knows, perhaps he did awaken a love of nature in me. Of course, we lived right in the middle of a wilderness then, in Northern Alberta, so I lived with nature every day! I grew up loving everything about it!
