Lady In Waiting

There is a song playing
gentle, soft in the background.
Like a rustle of first spring leaves
a promise once lost, now found.

A lady waiting in warm afternoon sun
dressed in Sunday finest, she sits alone.
Her favorite wicker on the front porch
of retirement center she calls home.

We pass her by on a busy errand
quick glance, she sits so in my mind.
Wondering what or for whom she awaits
rocking away as she passes the time.

White gloves, church hat with veil
she gifts a smile as we pass her by.
Questioning deepens, like the  hours spent
did she glimpse her youth in our eyes?

A little wave, a nod of hello
hurried recognition, someone cares.
We passed this lady waiting alone
for a moment our paths are shared.

We hear the song again, softly
then it is gone, forgotten too soon.
Like a chance encounter with beauty
on a warm Autumn afternoon.

This really makes me miss those elderly neighbors I used to have in my old neighborhood. I learned alot from them sitting with them on their front porches. I hope as I age that someone will find the time to come sit with me on mine. Good write.

I like your poem.  Nostalgic and tender.

Odd how one retains these "snapshots"
of inspiration out of all the other
things going on around us, eh?
Thank you each and all for the input
and encouragement, tis greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that what you see, what your feeling, maybe even fearful of, is your self. But if that is so,and who am I to say, don't be afraid, a joyful heart is not the property of just the young
