They Call It Paradise

This high, dry prairie, boasts a few
Old houses and a small church too.
One road passes through the town.
Surrounding fields, are sere and brown.
The winds that blow, most every day,
Will carry hopes and dreams away.
Not many come here anymore.
There was a time I'm sure it wore
An air of some prosperity
And there was much activity,
When farmers worked the land around
And you could hear pastoral sound
Of cows and horses, but no more
The buildings all look worn and poor!

An old dog, basking in the sun,
Appears to be the only one
Who sees me as I pass on through,
But I am sure that others do.
These houses have a watchful air,
That tells me folks are quite aware
A stranger has invaded,so,
Someone comes out to let me know,
There is no gas, no store or food.
He is abrupt and almost rude!
I leave and watch it fade behind.
It brings a question to my mind.
They call it Paradise and I,
Just shake my head and wonder why!

Sounds like my home town.  I went back a year ago and I was so disappointed.  It is named "Cando" but I think that is not applicable any more.  Joyce

Dear Betty Lou

Your verse says it all!  The 'Paradise's' and the 'Cando's' are 'Nomore'!!!!!!!

A sadness washed over me when I read your poem.

Dear Joyce:

I have never gone back to Paradise!  I happened upon it quite by accident, but I never forgot it.  It had such a mournful air and you could tell it was on its way out!

Thanks for commenting.

Dear Isobel:

Thanks so much for your comments. It was a sad little place and I doubt if it is even there now.

Dear Betty Lou,

Your poem reminds me of my birthplace in the farmlands of Wisconsin. I miss those days where life was simpler. Very descriptive. I really enjoyed the poem.

Love,
Patricia

Patricia:

This was written about a small farming village in southeastern Idaho, but I'm sure there are many places that fit the same description. Glad you liked it!

Oh!  This does so sound like my hometown and the neighboring ones as well.

You've managed to capture quite clearly the towns fading out ... like the old west

Bravo!

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. It is sad to see those quaint old towns disappearing I think.  It was a nice way of life.

Dear MiCheLLe:
It is sad to see these small towns dying and I feel sorry for the people who live there.  Out away from the cities, there are many like this.
Thanks.
