The horizon shimmeres in the mid-day heat haze
Azure sky almost matching the cotton of her sun dress
Her young spirit, so in love with the promise of the day
And all the magic ofherafternoonindependence

She kicks off her shoes as she reaches the cool grass
Skipping barefoot across the sun brightened meadow
Freedomgiveslift to her small feet in a fantasy of flight
Heart in a rhythm ofjoy ,blushes her face in a rosy glow

Across the meadowis a shaded spot beneath an old oak tree
Amarker ofa secret path, to herplace by thelittle brook
Smiling she greets theancient tree, patting its rough old bark
Laughing asshe hears the little toad, give her a welcoming croak

Dropping down, she crawls through aspace beneath a berry bush
Scraping her knee in sandy soil , unhindered by the tear of flesh
She wrestles her way towards the splash of the brook upon the rocks
Then all at once shehas arrived in herplaceofpeacefulness

Home again by her emerald bank, sherests on the warm flat rock
Cupping her hands she drinks greedily the sweetness of the stream
She closes her eyes and tilts her head in worship of the lovinggods
That she may come here and taste July in the summer of her dream

it did interrupt the flow a bit but, the piece stands tall. well written ...

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

This is loely June and of course you can still go back and edit if you want to.  You are calling on your memories I know because I do not think it is summerin England any more than here.  I thought perhaps you were speaking of a small child.  Children can enjoy the moment with so much skill.  But if not, a child at heart.  I loved it.  Joyce

Thank you for all your lovely replies to this poem.It was written about myself as a young girl aged 11 or 12 years , in the days when it seemed safe for a girl to walk into the countryside alone. I used to take a book with me and loved to run barefoot to my secret place ..........   ahhhhhhh    those days !!!

well anyway, i am so happy you all took the time to read and comment on this one, it means a lot to me.

hugs from june x

delightful poem, June...I long for summer...

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

junemac:  I enjoyed this so much. Your images were so sharp and clear I could feel like I was along with you.  Reminds me of myself, when young, as I had a secret spot in the woods, by a creek!
