Devil Eyes

Dark, old tunnels, dank and cold,
Where men once dug and searched for gold,
Beckoned me to come explore.
It wasn't very long before
I took a flashlight and I went.
Though at first, I only meant
To venture in a little ways,
Strange formations drew my gaze.

A sudden premonition that
Made me stop.Perhaps a bat?
It sent a chill and raised my hair.
Told me something waited there.
I shone my light and looked ahead.
Two eyes glimmered, devil red!
I gave a cry and dropped my light.
I heard it rolling out of sight.

I tried to quell my rising fears.
My blood was pounding in my ears.
Slowly then, I backed and kept
One hand on the wall and crept
Cautiously and carefully.
A snarling sound then came to me
And so I waited fearfully,
Wishing, somehow, I could see!

Somewhere behind a footstep fell
And then a voice I knew so well,
Called to ask me where I'd gone
There came a beam of light that shone.
A sudden rush that knocked me flat.
I glimpsed a large and tawny cat,
That bolted past my friend and me
And screamed at us defiantly!

A bruise or two was all we had.
It could have been so very bad!
That cougar must have had his lair
Somewhere in the dark, back there
And that was fine, I found that I
Could now be satisfied with my
Cabin and the mountainsides
Away from where that cat resides!

Exploring the caves were ya...sounds like a scary trek there. Yikes. Kept me on the edge of my seat that's for sure.
Love,
Terri~

Nothing like a good howling poem, lots of fun and eerie too.

(sigh) Ooohhhhhhh...this gave me the chills, dearest friend, eyes can always look eerie when glowing in the darkness though cougars are just as tame as anything else when on the prowl! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for hsharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Barb:  I actually wrote this many years ago. My husband, two sons and I, lived in a ghost town in Nevada for several years. It was an old mining town and the tunnels were so interesting to explore.  Except this one which was occupied!

Noah:  I appreciate your remarks.  My friend and I were blocking the only way out for this cougar and he decided to bowl us over and flee!

Dear Marge:  Good lesson here, don't go poking in dark places! I saw the cougar many times after this rather hostile introduction, but he kept his distance and so did I.

Thanks!

Betty Lou...

Great story!  Thank you!  I'm a spelunker from way back and you just never know what or "who" you're going to find in deep dark holes in the earth...never ran into something as big as that though! I'm sincerely glad that you two "worked it out"!

Betty, this had my heart racing and I nearly let out a screech
when you dropped the light!

A wonderful write and thank goodness it was only a 'cat.'
