Fate

When I think of how it could have been,
It might have been, it should have been.
I know it can't be right again;
I sigh and then I cry again.

If only fate had been more kind,
We would have had the time to find
That future which should have been ours;
A lifetime full of sunny hours.

Not our fault it was not to be.
God called you prematurely.
Why did you die and why not I?
In this life I cannot know why.

I envy all the couples who
Reach a great age and still are two.
I pray they've lived the life that we
Would have pursued were it to be.

And then they read the names again
That tragic roll of names again
And I know it's not the same again
For many since that nine/eleven.

They too had their lives ahead
Those thousands who should not be dead.
Their loved ones left to wail and cry,
An entire nation asking why.

One senseless, evil act has changed
The ordered to the mad deranged.
We as one people share the pain,
Fight to be free of fear again.

The bravest of us fight again
To set our world upright again.
With God and goodness on our side
We read the names of those who died.

Each of those names was once a life,
A husband, father, daughter, wife.
We vow that evil will not reign.
Our nation will be whole again.

A beautiful and loving tribute Joyce. I think this should be published so that all Americans can keep it as a remembrance.

Joyce;  A fine poem and voices what so many of us are feeling at this time.

a lovely offering dear Joyce. There is no shortcut to ease the ache. Only your faith can sustain you. Peace .
