The Years Without You

You had said you'd never leave me
I'm sure you meant it true.
They didn't ask for permission
When the angels came for you.
Twice those we were together are
The years since you've been gone.
I ask why you instead of me
Whose life was so soon done.
I lived on but the life we had
Was lost to me that day.
I often think what might have been
If you'd not gone away.

Things that had seemed very easy
When you were by my side,
Became burdonsome and heavy
No matter how I tried.
The children were a help to me,
Somehow we muddled through.
There were times both sad and happy
When we all needed you.
Now there are precious grandchildren
You didn't live to see.
I have told them all about you,
How much you meant to me.

There is not one among the lot
Who hasn't make me proud.
You would have so enjoyed them
Had it only been allowed.
Those sweet years we had together
Went too fast and were too few,
But I'm glad I didn't miss them
Or these memories of you.
I've so often turned to tell you
Of things that made me glad;
Or when I had no answer and
They really needed Dad.
