The Winter World

We tramped through snowy fields today,
Enjoying winter on display.
Black water, gleaming narrowly,
Where once a wide creek used to be.
Encroached upon by banks of snow,
It muttered icily below.

We saw the signs along its brink
Of animals who came to drink.
The raccoon and the deer appear
And many turkey tracks are here.
They look so lacy, spread around
Across a tract of frozen ground.

A humble bridge came into sight.
We went across it so we might
Climb up a little hill to see
The panoramic artistry
Of shrouded trees, that stand enmasse,
While waiting for the cold to pass.

A faint breeze, whispering a tune,
Reminded it would be night soon
And so we stopped and turned about,
To follow our blurred footsteps out.
The day was hurrying to go.
It threw long shadows on the snow.

They deepened even as we passed
And when we reached our home at last,
The warmth and coziness denied
The winter world we left outside!

this is a wonderful piece masterfully crafted. your images are so vivid I felt a chill as if I were indeed trecking through the snowy hills and fields myself.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Betty,

This piece is very wonderfully written. I am sitting here freezing today, but your piece even through the chill it portrayed also gave me some beauty to think of.

Dawn:  Thanks for reading.  I have been cold all winter and it hasn't even been a bad one, so far.  Can't seem to stay warm, so I really sympathize with you!

Trillium, I enjoyed your poem, I keep my wood stove as full as I can.  I have a hard time staying warm in the winter.  Thanks for sharing.
