Each night the boy stands outside the bakeshop backdoor,
waiting for the shopman to throw leftover breads.
If he is lucky,  he’s there ahead of all the  kids,
Who, like him, come scrounging for these precious scraps.

Tonight, the streets are dark and slippery.
The rains have come, and he has no raincoat.
He knows he will be late, later than all the others,
still hope pushes him to go, anyway.

Inside a one-room shanty, his mother lies sick and moaning,
The boy is reluctant to leave her this way, in pain.
But this is their only lifeblood, their daily bread.

The boy huddles and shivers beneath the store’s canopy,
waiting for the shopman and his unsold breads.
But the shop lights are turned off,  and not a kid is around.

In desperation, he climbs in through an open window,
determined to find breads the shopman has left.
Peering through the counters,  he touches the alarm.

And there is no bread.
The police comes and takes him away,
empty-handed.

jjote:  A sad story and unfortunately, I'm sure it is all too true, in many parts of the world. really has impact!

Wow! This is very sad. Is this a true story? What became of the boy and his mother?

It's just a story that comes to my mind when I see street boys roaming around at night, some reaching out their hands to beg when cars pause at traffic stop lights, or even little girls selling flowers..
and yes, it can all be too true, and I'm just giving vent to the sadness.
Thanks to all for empathizing.
