Come to sunny California
They used to say
Tell your friends and relative's back home
They are welcome any day
They too can enjoy the California dream
Come one come all
Enjoy with us a life supreme

Now as we look across the land
Houses spread over hills and valleys
Freeways that are free no more
Congested roads are the rule
People traveling north and south
Grown accustomed to the hectic pace
What has happened to this place?

What happened to the peace
About which the Hippie's spoke
What's happened?
Is it that money rules?
Real Estate is a game of success
And he who prospers turning the most cash
Is the winner in the game of life

Are there any Hippie's left?
They told us the best things in life were free
Young as they were they believed it was a new philosophy

Where have all the Hippie's gone?
Somewhere is California there is a new breed of one
Setting in an 200 year old Oak tree
And I for one applaud his efforts

I'm sure they are there but perhaps by a different name.  This world goes forward by small leaps not at a steady pace.  The world as opposed to the earth which has a set time for everything.  Joyce

Songbird, Great poem you have written here, sure makes you think about yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I assume change happened, and they had to conform or get booted out of the society that seems to rule all. I doubt the man you refer to in the tree will get very far, but he is out there trying at least. Thanks for sharing this here with us.

although I was a little young at the time...I am a true hippie at heart. I like the peace they spoke of and the nature.(and the music)

A very true and nice write you just wrote.
