Spirits of the Past

There's something about buildings
Abandoned long ago,
That causes curiosity
And makes me want to know
Who lived here in the heyday
Of this ghost town in the west?
What happened to the miners,
To the cowboys and the rest?

Standing in the old saloon,
I listen for a sound,
But all I hear are whispers
From the breeze that's blowing round.
I read the old newspapers
That are tacked up on the wall.
They're yellow and they're faded
And I can't see much at all.

There's little that was written.
Just some names and dates and such
And they crumble into nothing
Underneath my slighest touch.
The rooms are filled with rubbish
And the dust is thick and gray.
How I wish that I had seen it,
Before people went away.

There is nothing here to hold me
And the day is ebbing fast.
But I linger on, communing,
With the spirits of the past!

Wonderful as usual Betty.  I hope those people left a bit of written history behind somewhere.  I am busy collecting stories that I have been writing and am putting them into a book for my family for Christmas.  It has been keeping me so busy that I have been neglecting the forums.  But I'll be back with vim and vigor.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Thanks for reading.  What a great gift for your family for Christmas, or any other time, for that matter.  A great idea.

Oooooo! Tindals (I mean "tingles" tehe) went up and down my spine. I loved this piece! I could almost hear the lamenting souls whispering my name! You certainly created an eerie atmosphere and conjured up the feelings and thoughts that I have experienced as well when I have come across an abandoned house while hiking in the woods.

Betty, this was a most fascinating write and there is nothing more interesting than poking around to discover the past. There are many times I wish I could visit days gone by.

I really enjoyed reading this.

EA:  Thanks for your comments.  I lived in a ghost town in Nevada for 5 - 1/2 years and while there, managed to visit a number of others.  I found them fascinating and they all had such atmosphere.  Glad you enjoyed this.

Marti:  I'm glad you enjoyed this.  I have visted a number of ghost towns and isolated mining camps in Nevada and also Oregon and California.  It's amazing what people have left behind!
