Children of the Sea

In fishing nets, beneath the sea,
Where no one hears their agony,
Countless dolphins drowned today.
Someone should be made to pay!

If they were children hanging there,
Deprived of all life-giving air,
What a clamor would arise.
Screams of anguish fill the skies!

They breathe air the same as we
And they befriend us constantly.
Cruelty breeds cruelty.
Don't we have the sense to see?

It isn't that we use their hides
Or eat the meat their death provides.
Are we so innured to dying?
Can't we hear the dolphins crying?
Ban the nets and set them free.
They are the children of the sea!

One of my dreams is to swim with Dolphins! They are so wise and incredibly gentle....this breaks my heart as well. Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

such a waste of natural beauty and grace. is there no limit to man's cruelty?

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  Thanks for commenting and I wonder the same thing you do.  The cruelty to animals and mankind, never seems to lessen.

especially since they have iq's as big as us, more potential (their brains are MUCH bigger), and they are damn near sentient!
they can suffer and mourn!

sorry to go off; the poem did it though, let that be an indication of its power.

Betty, this is a really good work. I love dolphins and I could almost hear them.  With my mind's eye I could almost see them playing in the ocean. Thanks for sharing.

Love To All,
Ethel

Betty~
I can't even begin to put into words how this touched me.
I am such a lover of all living things.
I could feel the dolphins' fear and pain and
hear their cries as I read.
This literally left a lump in my throat and an ache in my heart.
A very powerfully written piece and with a priceless message.
I thank you for sharing it.
Hugs,
~Vicky

Vicky:  I appreciate your comments so much and totally understand how you feel.  Unfortunately, it's not just the dolphins that are being killed, although perhaps we identify with them more, because of their charming and friendly ways. There are so many types of sea life that are being wantonly destroyed in drift nets.  when the nets are drawn in, they are tossed back into the sea.  It's so sad and I'm glad that you feel as I do.

CHILI:  Thanks for your comments.  There is a small movement afoot to try to save some of the sea creatures that are being dessimated, but it seems so small compared to the great need.
