a tear runs down my love's cheek
what pains your heart, please tell?
tho I've been gone a long time
I pledge to listen well
it's you  I put before me
no one will take your place
a tear runs down my love's cheek
no smile upon your face?

a tear runs down my cheek, dear
and drops onto the floor
where we once stood in fond embrace
before you went to war
it seems a harsh betrayal
'cause another's love I've found
these tears run down my cheek, dear
to another, I'm now bound

a tear ran down my love's cheek
that day I went to war
for years I fought the battles fierce
'til I could fight no more
my thoughts of you betrayed them
my pals upon the line
the tear that ran down your cheek, love
my honor it did blind

a tear ran down my cheek each day
a vision I would find
of you fighting that damn cruel war
as sadly I fought mine
but battles on the home front
are never always won
while tears ran down my lonely cheeks
like bullets from your gun

yes tears are like those bullets, dear
they ripped our souls apart
we bled not having note or word
to mend these aching hearts
so back to comrades I will go
and pray it's not too late
like that tear that runs down your cheek love
I run to meet my fate

A wonderful story.  War does all sorts of crimes, it's not all the bloodshed.  Joyce

A sad and painful story, but very well told.

I really like how this read like dialogue, yet flowed as poetry. Sad, but very good.

Thank you all, I'm glad you enjoyed this one.  I actually wrote the first line to this one months ago and could never seem to get it to go anywhere.  Then, a few days back I opened my scrap folder and read the line again and it took off for me.  Never throw away those little phrases you have trouble with...eventually they'll work for you.*S*

Good story. Battles with guns- battles with the heart- they're both tough.
