questing sun-fingers illuminate agate gems
that lay scattered casually upon the sandy shore
little boy voices carried by the sea breezes
lofting and wavering with the wind's force
rise higher still upon a treasure find
"Mummy, Mummy come quick!"

and she comes, one hand on her wide-brim hat
the other clutching a woven straw bag
the Child-Knight Treasure Trove
guarded ferociously by Mother-Warrior
extending forth the Jewel Chest, she smiles
hand still taming her flyaway hat
wind nipping at her tangled, sunkissed tresses
tugging at her dress to alternately reveal and secret
her lithe, youthful beauty
and she the Treasure-Guardian, ceases not her duty
for to be the Keeper of the Agate Trove
is a fine duty indeed, bestowed only on the Most Loved
by her Child-Knight sons, in a ceremonious decree

after much Treasure seeking, they stop to rest in the dune's lee
away from the incessant sea winds, away from the ocean's roar
knelt there with her Child-Knight Benefactors
the Fair Maid brings forth the Royal Supper
complete with a Trifle for the hungry Treasure Seekers
with much giggling and counting of their Jewels
the young Knights soon deem the day over
and offer to escort the Lady Fair to her Hill-Top Castle
for but a warm scone and a cup of milk tea

pulling her escorts close, arm over each small shoulder
Lady Fair walks slowly back up the sand trail
to the tiny beach cottage they had leased for the long summer
and settles in for another peaceful evening
at Fairfield by the Sea

"Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything."

Wow Heather, you just keep on writing these beauties! This is amazing. Oops, that sounds like empty flattery I know, but it's true. You paint such a vivid picture here. Sounds like those two little knights had a whole lot of fun out questing with their Mother-Warrior

*hugs*

Well Eric, I have had this vision forever floating around in my head about Agate Seekers....and I thought the whole make-believe aspect of this would be fun and true..I have played many times like that with my boys
I'm so glad you enjoyed this...twas lots of fun to write.

Wow!  I really enjoyed this piece!  A great story within your poem.
