I tell you how I love you
Try to show you how I feel
Yet, since you  don't see anything
You don't know if it's real.

Well, take this empty cup, my dear,
And fill it up with air.
Make sure you fill it to the brim
So I can see it there.

Then take this empty glass, my sweet,
Catch sunlight from the sky.
Then let me lift it to my lips
So I can drink it dry.

Please take this empty plate, my love
And carry it along.
I want to see you fill it with
A robin's morning song.

What's this? The cup is empty!
I don't see a thing  in there.
Does that mean that there cannot be
Such a thing as air?

I see no sunlight in this glass.
Does this mean there is none?
No beams of light to brighten day
Cascading from the sun?

And what about the robin's song?
Why, I don't see a thing!
Does this mean it's a fallacy
To think that robins sing?

Now take this cup and glass and plate
Enjoy a hearty meal.
They're filled with all my love for you.
Believe me, dear, it's real.

Something I've tried to explain many times.
Never have I been able to say it as well.
