She might have cried
When she stared
At the blood-broken skin
There
Under his ripped shirt
The whiskey bottle bleeding
In his hand
Sweetening the violent air
She might have cried
Another night

Oh so true. This one brings to mind my daughter and her relationship with her horrid husband, One time too many, and the empathy and the love gets turned off. Great poem.

~Lothy,...(may I)?  Hehe. This little piece of yours speaks a thousand words.  My,my. *sigh* Your choice of wording is very impressive. This just made perfect sense and just honestly shows how things end up at times and the effect or lack of that it has on one. WoW!!!  Have witnessed a similar situation. I'm thinking this is some pretty profound poetry right here. Love it. *Peace.

Uta...Your really nailed this one.  I see this all too often...and I see the women trapped in these situations. It's sad.  Hardrock

Makes me wonder what she did to him that we should all be applauding for. It is enough, and yet not too much. Another good one.

But love came laughing by and
Cried "I enter everywhere!!!"

Hi folks!
Thanks for all the lovely comments!!   And I'm sorry it rang so many bells   , but it was this kind of reality-snapshot I was trying to create.
And Jeremiah, thanks for the concern  , but fortunately the poem isn't about me.
