Lost in our system
I call it foul play
Evil of mankind
Where is the shame

So frail, So delicate
Well seasoned, yet..
Overlooked
Why...
Why treated as drifters
Why forgotten
Their passive resistance
is misunderstood

I see lines on their faces
That confess their stay
A longevity award
is now a nursing home

Ive seen them..
Sitting by the window
Waiting for a visitor
That never comes

They wait anyways
A stranger will do
I can hear their thoughts
Clamoring about..Wondering
What a hug would feel like
Someone to hold their hand
Its been too long to remember

They shuffle along the corridors
Those that can
Guided by a cane

Suspenders holding up clothes
Someone donated
Plaids mixed with stripes
Shoes on the wrong feet
Does anyone notice

They are someones...
Daughter, Mom, Brother, Dad
They belong
To someone

When they entered this world
A party was held
Why now
As they prepare to say goodbye
Has the room emptied

Wow, Deborah, that one gave me a chill. Its  true about so many, not just the elderly. The veterans, the homeless, the poor of any kind.  The last line was a killer. Now I have to go out and visit my Grandmother. Right away..

In my work I have seen your words in life many times

Deb..this should be printed, copied and sent to the relatives of everyone with someone in a nursing home, retirement center, hospital...or it will never stop.  So true...thank you.  Hardrock
