Flagstones patterned, fringed with grass,
Blaze the way that my feet must pass
To the postern gate that's a sesame
To a wilding place of tranquility.
Where dawns are opal and dusks are pearl,
And dreams are couched in the tender curl
Of an unborn rose, whose roots lie deep
In the brown, mossed earth where seedlings sleep,
And indigo shadows, in cool caress
Ease the heart with their tenderness.
Tall trees bending in easy sway
Rustle their leaves in a lazy way,
Whispering vagaries...sly coquettes...
Of conquests made...and a few regrets.
Scattered blossoms in ruby hue
Blanket the beds where tulips grew
When spring was young and early dawn
Served them with diamonds to feast upon;
And a drifting petal's velvet touch,
Like the lips of one we have loved too much,
Awakens dreams and reveries float
Over Memory's sea, as a spirit boat
That is silver-sailed and vision crewed,
Blown by winds of a vagrant mood,
Till lost forever where waters blend
With deep'ning clouds at journey's end;
Leaving but stardust on breaking wave
Like elfin ghosts of the hopes it gave.
But a breeze comes wafting a soft perfume
From a locust tree hung in purple bloom,
And sorrow fades, as a moth in white
Turns gold in the sun on his upward flight
From a burnished blossom, straight and high
By a rainbow stair to a sapphire sky!
And songs are born and echoes ring
In the limpid notes that content can bring
...Yet deep from the soul a longing springs
For a greater solace than earthly things
Can offer a heart...and my empty hands
Reach where a form in the shadow stands,
To clasp but a wraith...of love dream-born...
A shred of mist from a white cloud torn,
And memories haunt this jeweled retreat
That is dream-swept now...and incomplete!

What great imagery of a dreamy world. One could see every thing, from the first blade of grass to the last cloud. Beautiful work.

Wow!  Great piece Rex.  Really enjoyed the read.  See you and I have something sorta in common...we both live in the Houston area...me over by The Woodlands.  Look forward to reading more of your "stuff".
